Positive Partnerships: Getting to Know the Powder River County Fair Board

The Building a Better Broadus Committee of the Powder River Chamber of Commerce & Ag is launching a new campaign called “Positive Partnerships”.  The goal is to raise awareness, acknowledge contributions, and foster partnerships and participation in the many volunteer organizations at work in our community.

With the county fair approaching in the next couple weeks, it seemed appropriate to take this opportunity to introduce the Powder River County Fair Board.  This volunteer county board is largely responsible for the planning and facilitation of the fair activities. Their mission is “Annually providing a quality County Fair highlighting the learning and achievements of 4-H and FFA members; and to plan, organize and facilitate an event providing entertainment for and involvement by community members.”

The Fair Board consists of dedicated volunteers who serve 5-year-terms and commit countless hours of planning and hard work to create a quality event.  Applicants for open board positions are appointed by the County Commissioners.  Current 2021 board members include Chairman:  Drew Gaskill; Vice Chair:  Jay Schroeder; Members – John Elgin, Marlee Bilbrey, Hattie Arithson, Stacie Ostendorf, Heather Cunningham, Craig and Christine Appleman, and Krista Gotfredson.  These are the individuals that plan, organize, set up, tear down and generally sweat profusely to provide our community residents with an experience that has historically been and continues to be a highlight for all ages.  On behalf of the community, we extend a hearty THANK YOU to all these board members for your many hours of dedication.

The interconnectedness of our small-town organizations and officials means that cooperative effort is key to executing a successful event.  When asked about current community partners, the board stated “The Fair Board works closely in conjunction with the 4-H Council to ensure the Fair meets the needs of the 4-H members and volunteers.  It also works closely with the County Commissioners for the purpose of funding and facility preparation.  The County Road Department and County Maintenance are supportive of the Fair and the Town of Broadus is a key partner to facilitating the event. Extension staff Julie Riley, Mary Rumph and Kelda Page also work closely with the board to arrange the many details necessary.” So, it seems that “All hands on deck!” truly captures the essence of a county fair!  It’s important to give credit where credit is due, and although the Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Fair Board for certain activities in the past, we are not, contrary to some misconceptions, involved in planning the Fair.

The fair is a long-standing historical tradition in our community and 2020 marked the 100th Anniversary of the Powder River County Fair.  When asked about their legacy, the board notes “It has truly stood the test of time.  In a community our size, in a county with limited funds, the Fair still provides a multitude of entertainment, events and activities designed to meet the needs of all in the community.” Powder River County provided a total of $20,350 to the 2021 fair.  Until recently, fair entertainment was paid entirely through donations, but the current board is now able to fund entertainment within their County budget.  Our community as a whole is invested in the success and longevity of this enterprise.  Many awards, sponsorships and donations are provided by local businesses and individuals in support of the events, entertainment and activities.

You can also support the Fair Board with volunteer time.  More help is always appreciated and you can contact a board member if you would like to be involved.  They say, “We always need “boots on the ground” volunteers to assist as superintendents, judges, hauling tables, chairs, setting up the facilities and planning activities and events during the Fair.”  If you’re interested in a board position, contact Cynde Jo Gatlin for information on terms and board openings.

This year, the 101st County Fair is currently being planned for August 10th – 13th and it looks like another fun-packed four-day event.  Visit https://prco.mt.gov/Fair for more details including the fairbook and full schedule of events for 2021.  And while you’re out and about enjoying the festivities, please thank your local Fair Board members and Extension staff for their efforts!
